Key differences
Opposite directions
The simplest way to think about it: Speechify takes written words and turns them into audio. Superwhisper takes spoken words and turns them into text. They sit on opposite ends of the same pipeline.
Speechify is for people who want to listen instead of read. Feed it articles, PDFs, ebooks, or web pages and it reads them to you in a natural-sounding voice. Lots of people absorb information better by ear, or want to get through content while commuting.
Superwhisper is for people who want to talk instead of type. You speak, it produces clean formatted text in whatever app you're using. It works system-wide on macOS, Windows, and iOS.
Privacy and processing
Superwhisper processes everything on your device. The AI models run locally. Your audio never gets uploaded anywhere, and it works without an internet connection.
Speechify uses cloud-based processing for AI voice synthesis. That makes sense for what it does. Generating high-quality speech from 1,000+ voice profiles is heavy and fits a cloud model. But your content does go through their servers.
When you want Superwhisper
You're writing emails, coding, drafting documents, taking notes, or doing anything that involves getting words out of your head and into a computer. You want to talk instead of type. Maybe you think faster than you type, or you have an RSI, or you just prefer speaking.
Super Mode reads your screen context and formats your dictation appropriately. Email Mode structures your speech into proper emails. You can build custom modes with your own system prompts. It's a writing tool.
When you want Speechify
You have a pile of articles, research papers, or ebooks you need to get through. Or you retain information better through audio. Speechify shines here. Voice quality is impressive. Speed control up to 5x lets power users blast through content. Voice cloning is a nice touch for personalized audiobook-style content.
They've also added AI podcast creation from documents, which is a clever way to make dense material more digestible. It's a reading tool, and a good one.
Where Speechify does well
Speechify has broad platform support, including Android and a Chrome extension that works on any web page. The 1,000+ AI voices and voice cloning features are impressive. For accessibility, it's a real tool for people with dyslexia or visual impairments.
The Chrome extension is particularly useful. Highlight text on any webpage and have it read back to you instantly. For research-heavy workflows, that kind of convenience adds up.
