Key differences
Google has voice input in two places. Gboard voice typing is the Android keyboard's mic button. Gemini for macOS added system-wide dictation in 2026. Superwhisper is a dedicated dictation app on four platforms.
| Superwhisper | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | macOS, Windows, iOS, Android | Android (Gboard) and Mac (Gemini app, Apple Silicon, macOS 15+) |
| Price | Free, Pro $8.49/mo or $84.99/yr, lifetime $249.99 | Gboard voice typing is free. Some Gemini Mac features need a Google AI subscription |

| Cleanup | AI modes remove filler and reformat | Gemini dictation removes filler words and handles mid-sentence corrections |

Key differences
Two different Google products
Gboard voice typing is the mic button on the Android keyboard. You tap it and speak when you see "Speak now". Gemini for macOS is a separate app that added dictation in 2026: hold the Fn key in any app, speak, and cleaned-up text lands at your cursor.
Superwhisper covers the same job on Mac, and also on Windows, iOS, and Android.
Platforms
If you're on Android, Gboard's voice typing is already on your keyboard and costs nothing, which is a strong default. On Mac, Gemini's dictation needs an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 15 or later. Superwhisper runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, Windows, iOS, and Android. Its Android app uses cloud models only.
Cleanup and modes
Gemini's Mac dictation removes filler words like "umm" and handles mid-sentence corrections. Superwhisper does this too, and adds modes: context-aware modes can use what is on your screen (Pro), Voice Mode is plain transcription, and you can write custom prompts for email, notes, or code comments.
Offline and privacy
Superwhisper's local models run on your device without internet on macOS, Windows, and iPhone, and cloud models are optional. Android uses cloud models only. Google's announcement for Gemini on Mac doesn't say where dictation is processed, so check its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub before dictating anything sensitive.
Languages
Superwhisper supports 100+ languages. Gboard voice typing doesn't cover every language, and Gemini's Mac dictation started in English.
Where Gemini does well
Gboard voice typing is free, built into Android, and good for quick messages with no setup. The Gemini Mac app also ties dictation to the rest of Gemini, so you can ask it about your screen or rewrite highlighted text in the same app.

Guillermo Rauch
Superwhisper delivers on the dream of an AI-native operating system. The best part: it's insanely fast and does just what you expect.

Pieter Levels
Tried @superwhisperapp today. Very nice. Lets me talk to Cursor and then it codes for me, just gets it right.
